Multimedia and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

If a picture is worth one thousand words, then how many words is a video worth? Or better yet, how many visitors is a video worth? Just in case you haven't noticed, there has been an video explosion on the web. The combination of quicker internet connections and the rise of video hosting and sharing sites such as YouTube and Vimeo has made online video accessible to the masses.

Multimedia is another cog in the SEO machine! In addition to traditional search engine optimization, now marketing professionals need to consider how to best distribute and promote their video content. You would be surprised at just how much multimedia and video you could be creating for your website. Aside from the viral video boom, multimedia is best used for product promotions, training and support videos. I never did learn how to put on a necktie and I still have to go to YouTube to check out a tutorial. (I'm not joking!)

Online Video can be hosted either on a company’s site on a shared hosting service such as YouTube, or both. Video sharing sites, such as YouTube, have their own internal search engines. Since their indexing is generally limited to videos hosted on their site, that means that those doing a search for something beyond YouTube would probably turn to Google or another major search engine.

Now that Google has their own video search engine, Google Video, it may be a also good idea to index mutlimedia in Yahoo Video Search, since they make an attempt to catalog a more comprehensive video collection. There are many other internet video search engines to consider such as AOL’s Truveo powered searchvideo.com.

Regardless of where video is hosted, for search engine optimization (SEO) purposes audio and video content should be in as many formats as possible. This will prevent you from being excluded from video search engines due to problems with file format. Whatever the format, it is good practice to include a format that offers the best quality, highest internet speed and reaches the widest audience. It is also important to clearly label the types of formats offered and include file meta data properties such as titles, descriptions and keyword tags.

Commercial content should include a watermark of the company's logo to deter theft and to indicate origin.

It is also good seo practice to include a text transcript of the audio portion of the mulitmedia content. This practice is very practical and great for users with slow connection and a bonus for search engine optimization.
